Dear colleagues,

The Singapore Urological Association is pleased to announce the Urology Fair 2008, in conjunction with the 1st Asia-Pacific Kidney Cancer Symposium.

The target audience of this meeting are the urologists and oncologists from the Asia-Pacific region as well as worldwide. The themes of the Scientific Meeting for 2008 are Kidney Cancer and General Urology.

There have been numerous advances made in the  management of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) over the past few years. Much progress has been made in defining the genetics of hereditary RCC. Prognostic markers for recurrence are available to guide clinicians on follow-up after surgery. Laparoscopic nephrectomy has been shown to offer a quick recovery and equivalent oncologic outcomes to open surgery. Nephron-sparing surgery is becoming more widely adopted, and minimally invasive techniques have been developed in this regard. In my opinion, the most interesting advances are coming from the field of biological therapy, with patients now being offered new hope despite having advanced disease.

We will be inviting eminent experts in the field of RCC to provide updates on the management of this rapidly evolving arena, in the form of lectures, panel discussions and debates.

At the same time we recognise that most urologists in the Asia-Pacific region continue to have a significant General Urology practice. We intend to devote the second half of our meeting to the topics of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), andrology and male infertility and the overactive bladder. Our panel of experts will be providing us on the latest updates for the management of these common conditions.

For the surgically inclined (most urologists are) we will be organising a hands-on laparoscopy workshop, where participants will be mentored in laparoscopic surgical techniques in the dry lab and animal model. In addition, we will be holding a surgical workshop, where participants will be able to watch our experts performing live surgery. Spaces for these two workshops are limited, so please register early.

Over the past years, it has been our pleasure to host people from many different countries during our annual meeting.

I sincerely hope that you will be able to attend our meeting in 2008, and also take the opportunity to enjoy our tropical island paradise.

Yours faithfully

Dr NG Chee Kwan
